Surgical Track - Sessions for Learners at all Skill Levels

Surgical Track: From Foundation Skills to Building a Mohs Practice

SDPA’s talented faculty provide an overview of surgical concepts and techniques in the three-part Surgical Track scheduled Friday, June 23 in the Essex Ballroom North. The sessions are appropriate for learners at all skill levels.

Advanced Surgical Skills

Faculty: Theresa Talens, DNP, FNP-C

I will be leading this session, in which I discuss a practice model utilizing skillsets of NPs and PAs to help grow and develop a Mohs practice. I will discuss a practice model that can improve access to superior care, and also talk about how all parties involved will benefit - the Mohs surgeon, the dermatology practice, the NP/PA, and the patient!

At the conclusion of this session, participants will:

  • Identify members and roles of a MOHs team.
  •  Describe the Multiple Surgery Reduction Rule (MSRR).
  •  Discuss barriers and solutions.

Thank you, SDPA, for allowing me to use your platform to voice how valuable we are as providers in this area.  Understanding this practice model will, hopefully, open more opportunities for other NPs and PAs to practice at their fullest potential.

Intermediate Surgical Skills

Faculty: Kristina Liu, MD, MHS

Dr. Liu builds upon foundational concepts to include more advanced suturing techniques and correction techniques to improve scar cosmesis. In this session, she also reviews proper techniques, potential pitfalls, and “danger zones” for facial biopsies.

At the conclusion of this session, participants will:

  • Identify suturing techniques to improve surgical and cosmetic outcome, including mattress sutures for eversion, and slip knots in areas of high tension.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of dog-ear repairs and step-off deformity repairs.
  • Understand potential pitfalls and “danger zones” for facial biopsies.
  • Formulate a plan for the best cosmetic outcome, including proper selection of suture material, surgical orientation, and postoperative care.

Beginner Surgical Skills

Faculty: Kristina Liu, MD, MHS

Learners who need an introduction to foundational surgical concepts including aseptic technique, basic surgical instruments, and commonly used suture materials are encouraged to attend this session led by Kristina Liu, MD, MHS. Dr. Liu provides outstanding reviews of technical aspects of basic suture placement and elliptical excision of a skin lesion.

At the conclusion of this session, participants will:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of aseptic technique and basic surgical instruments.
  • Differentiate between various sutures and techniques commonly used in dermatologic surgery.
  • Formulate steps involved in an elliptical excision with intermediate repair.
